Resources
A number of special resources enrich students’ experiences studying rhetoric and communication studies at Richmond.
Richmond Debate Team
The Department of Rhetoric and Communication Studies houses an award-winning debate team that’s made a name for itself up and down the East Coast and beyond. The team consistently does well in the District 7 National Qualifier and Richmond students almost always earn coveted spots in the National Debate Tournament. In addition to competing in tournaments at Harvard University, UT Austin, West Point and other universities across the country, Richmond also hosts an annual tournament—the Jay Weinberg Autumn Debate Tournament. Debate students also sharpen their skills by serving as coaches and judges at a three-week high school debate workshop Richmond offers up and coming debaters.
Speech Center
Students in the rhetoric and communication studies major can refine their skills in preparing individual and group presentations at the Speech Center. This valuable resource offers assistance to those who wish to pursue effective speaking and articulate behavior across academic disciplines. The goal of the Speech Center is to offer assistance of the highest quality to student clients provided by well-trained student colleagues who may also be classmates and acquaintances. Many RHCS students take advantage of the opportunity to ultimately be a speech consultant or a speech fellow themselves.
Writing Center
Services in the Writing Center include individual tutorials in any subject as well as assistance with planning, revising and documenting papers. RHCS students are encouraged to utilize the Writing Center for various writing and related assignments.
Discipline-Specific Library Research Guide
Subject librarians at the University of Richmond Libraries maintain discipline-specific research guides for every academic course of study offered through the School of Arts & Sciences. Students doing researching rhetoric or communication studies can contact the subject librarian directly, view top recommended resources and conduct discipline-specific searches of databases and Web sites. In addition, subject librarians frequently highlight new titles related to the academic field.
